How to Spot Fake Funko POPs: A 2026 Collector’s Guide

Back in the 90s, I was trading POGs and hiding my Kenner Boba Fett behind my stereo so my little cousin wouldn’t destroy it. Fast-forward to 2025 and we’re here, grown-up(ish), still collecting only now it’s vaulted Funkos, con exclusives, and a spreadsheet longer than our old Napster download queues.

Today I want to hit on some real talk for anyone knee-deep in Funko POPs or 6-inch figs and wondering:

“Am I doing this collecting thing right?”

 Regret is Real. Ask Any Collector.

Ever passed on a $12 Funko that’s now worth $300?

Yeah… same.

Vaulted figures, surprise exclusives, and nostalgia bombs hit the aftermarket like a storm. If you’ve ever thought “I’ll grab that one later,” there’s a good chance it’s now only found in Reddit threads and eBay listings that make your wallet cry.

Fake POPs Are Everywhere (And Getting Sneakier)

It’s 2025 and bootleggers are bold. The box looks legit, the print feels fine… but something’s just off.

Here’s how to stay sharp:

  • Check for the serial number stamp (usually bottom of the box or foot of the figure)

  • Look at box print clarity – fake boxes tend to be slightly duller or have misaligned fonts

  • Compare the face sculpt – bootlegs often have wonky eyes or paint that’s just not it

Stay vigilant. And please, don’t get tricked by that $25 “SDCC Metallic Batman” that ships from who-knows-where.

Condition, Condition, Condition

 

I know you love unboxing… but box collectors run this town.

  • Crisp corners? Worth more.

  • No sun fade? Good move.

  • Stored in a soft or hard case? You just saved future value.

If you’re stacking figures on top of one another with no protection, my dude. You’re one cat knock-away from disaster.

Keep Track or Lose Track

Whether you’ve got 10 POPs or 310, your brain can’t remember them all.

Use a simple Google Sheet, the official Funko app, or inventory apps like PopPriceGuide. Knowing what you own helps avoid doubles, plan trades, and budget future buys (yeah, right… like we budget).

Know Your Stickers & Exclusives


Some of the biggest price jumps happen thanks to a sticker.

Chase variants, store exclusives (Hot Topic, Target, etc.), convention editions, they’re not just cool, they’re currency. Just remember: not all exclusives age well. Some sit, some spike. That’s the gamble, and that’s the thrill.

Display Like You Mean It

Look, I get it. We all start with figures lined up on a bookshelf.

But in 2025, your display is part of the hobby. And honestly, it can make or break the vibe.

Here’s what’s hot:

  • Acrylic risers – to make tiers without stacking boxes

  • Wall-mounted cases with LED or glow-in-the-dark accents

  • Soft or hard protectors – depending on grail status

  • Dust covers or clear cases – because UV and grime are real enemies
